Brute3D Face turns your iPhone into a facial motion-capture camera for Brute3D, the 3D animation app for Windows.

What you need

  • An iPhone that supports ARKit face tracking: any iPhone with Face ID, or one with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, running iOS 16 or later.
  • Brute3D on a Windows PC: get it at brutesoftware.com.
  • The iPhone and the PC on the same network (Wi-Fi, or the PC wired to the same router).

Connect to Brute3D

  1. On the PC, open Brute3D > Editors > Facial Mocap Editor. Leave the port at 11111 and press Connect. The editor lists the PC's network addresses.
  2. On the iPhone, open the PC address panel and type that address (and the port, if you changed it).
  3. Tap Connect. The first time, allow Local Network access.
  4. The status line changes to Connected to Brute3D, and your character's face follows yours.

Record a take

  1. In Brute3D's Facial Mocap Editor, bind the face mesh (Use Selected), then press Record. The iPhone shows a red REC badge.
  2. Perform, then press Stop in Brute3D.
  3. The iPhone sends the take to Brute3D, which keys it on the timeline from the frame where you pressed Record.

The iPhone records every camera frame of the take, so nothing is lost if Wi-Fi drops a few live frames. Takes are saved on the iPhone as CSV files: you'll find them in the app's takes list and in the Files app under On My iPhone > Brute3D Face. If a take wasn't sent, tap Send to Brute3D.

Troubleshooting

"No reply from Brute3D"
Check the address and port, that the Facial Mocap Editor is listening (Connect pressed), and that Windows Firewall allows Brute3D on private networks.
"Local network access is off"
Turn it on in Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network > Brute3D Face.
"Waiting for the network"
The iPhone has no usable network. Check that Wi-Fi is on and connected to the same network as the PC.
"This iPhone can't do face tracking"
This iPhone doesn't support ARKit face tracking. You need an iPhone with Face ID, or one with an A12 Bionic chip or newer.
The iPhone gets warm
Turn the preview off with the Preview button. Tracking, streaming and recording keep running.
The face doesn't move in Brute3D
Bind a mesh with ARKit blendshape targets. A head made with Brute3D's Create > ARKit Head has all 52 targets with the right names.
